Kurt Donald Cobain, líder de la banda Nirvana, se suicidó 5 de abril de 1997, fue una de las muertes que conmocionó al mundo.

Recordado por ser uno de los mejores músicos y compositores; además, de ser un ícono y voz de la Generación X, también ha sido considerado uno de los músicos de rock más emblemáticos e influyentes en la historia de la música.

Cobain formó Nirvana en su ciudad natal en 1985 y la estableció como parte de la escena musical de Seattle, con su álbum Bleach lanzado por el sello discográfico independiente Sub Pop en 1989.

Después de firmar con el sello DGC Records, la banda logró el éxito con “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, primer sencillo de su segundo álbum Nevermind  (1991). Tras su éxito, Nirvana fue etiquetado como «la banda principal» de la Generación X, y Cobain fue aclamado como «el portavoz de una generación».​

Cobain, sin embargo, estaba a menudo incómodo y frustrado, creyendo que su mensaje y su visión artística habían sido malinterpretadas por el público, siendo sus problemas personales a menudo objeto de atención de los medios.

Él desafió a la audiencia de Nirvana con su álbum de estudio final, In Utero (1993). El álbum no coincidió con las cifras de ventas de Nevermind pero aún fue un éxito crítico y comercial. A lo largo de su carrera musical, Cobain mantuvo una notoria rivalidad con Axl Rose, vocalista de la famosa banda Guns N’ Roses.

Kurt sufría de una extraña enfermedad estomacal, que lo condujo a consumir heroína para aliviar sus dolores. Además, tenía problemas de escoliosis y severos cuadros de depresión.  También tenía dificultad para sobrellevar su fama e imagen pública, las presiones profesionales y personales en su vida y de su esposa, la cantautora Courtney Love.

Fue encontrado 3 días después en su casa en Seattle, víctima por una herida auto infligida en la cabeza, dejando una nota de despedida y sus documentos cerca de él para que sea reconocido.

Las circunstancias de su muerte a los 27 años se han convertido en un tema de fascinación a nivel mundial. Nirvana, con Cobain como compositor, ha vendido más de 30 millones de álbumes en los Estados Unidos y más de 95 millones en todo el mundo.
