La mayoría de nosotros conoce el cementerio Presbítero Maestro, el cual es uno de los primeros cementerios de nuestro país por lo que se encuentra declarado como Monumento Histórico mediante Resolución Suprema N° 2900 del 28 de diciembre de 1972, considerado uno de los más antiguos de Latinoamérica.
Es por ello que el Ministerio de Cultura, a través del Viceministerio de Patrimonio Cultural e Industrias Culturales declaran como Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación a 320 esculturas funerarias, que se encuentran en el camposanto.
Estas esculturas poseen un gran valor histórico, artístico y social del siglo XIX y XX, realizadas mayormente en Italia y en menor número, en Francia; así como en talleres abiertos en Lima por escultores italianos y peruanos. Su valor estético recae en el material empleado, principalmente mármol de Carrara-Italia, y en la originalidad de su estado de conservación.
También se reconocen motivos ornamentales simbólicos de la fe católica y de la antigüedad clásica, permitiendo el reconocimiento de la destreza de la técnica y manufactura.
Cabe mencionar, que antes de la pandemia se realizaban recorridos nocturnos para conmemorar y deleitarse con las bellas esculturas que llevan con ellos grandes historias que jamás debemos olvidar, ya que forman parte de nuestra cultura.
