Hoy en día, el 1 de mayo de cada año se celebra el ‘Día del trabajador’ es diferentes partes del mundo; pero, ¿qué sucedió un día como hoy en 1886? ¿Qué manifestaciones se llevaron a cabo para respetar la jornada laboral?

A fines del Siglo XIX y bajo el lema “ocho horas de trabajo, ocho horas de ocio y ocho horas de descanso”, se produjeron varios movimientos obreros en Chicago con el fin de acortar las extenuantes jornadas laborales, que podían ser de hasta 18 horas.

Las movilizaciones aquí siguieron los días 2 y 3, hasta que tras una batalla campal, una compañía de policías procedió a disparar a quemarropa sobre la gente, produciendo seis muertos y decenas de heridos. En el día 4 de huelga, una persona que nunca fue identificada arrojó una bomba incendiaria que mató a siete policías e hirió a otros sesenta. Esto provocó que la policía reprimiera con disparos, dejando un saldo de muertos y heridos entre los trabajadores.

Por los fatales acontecimientos, 31 personas fueron enjuiciadas el 21 de junio de 1886: Dos de ellos a cadena perpetua, uno a 15 años de trabajos forzados y cinco a la muerte en la horca.

Sin embargo, un año más tarde en Illinois, se reconoció que el juicio a los Mártires de Chicago; no había respetado el derecho de los acusados y el gobernador perdonó a los sindicalistas que estaban detenidos.

Finalmente, en París en 1889, durante un congreso de la Segunda Internacional (asociación de partidos socialistas, laboristas y anarquistas de todo el mundo), se estableció el 1 de Mayo como Día del Trabajador para conmemorar a los Mártires de Chicago.
