De acuerdo a más datos arrojados por Unicef, existen 400 millones de niños y niñas sometidos a explotación laboral infantil a escala global.

Cada 16 de abril se celebra el Día Mundial contra la Esclavitud Infantil, en memoria de Iqbal Masih, un niño de 12 años que fue asesinado en Pakistan en el año 1996.

En ese entonces, la fama del negocio de alfombras era de potencia y esta fue la principal responsable del asesinato de Iqbal. El pasó la mayor parte de su vida trabajando en estas fábricas, en condiciones de esclavitud. Con tan solo 10 años se había unido a un grupo de activistas contra la explotación infantil. Según informa Unicef, esta organización logró que se cerraran varias fábricas explotadoras de niños y niñas.

La acción de Iqbal ayudó a muchos niños que se encontraban en su misma situación de vulnerabilidad, pero en 1996 fue asesinado y arrebatado de la causa por la que luchó durante su vida.

La «Protección Infantil contra el Abuso y la Violencia: Explotación Infantil» de Unicef, menciona que el 70% de los niños y niñas trabajadores del mundo lo hacen en el sector Agricultura. Además, en América Latina, también el 70% de los niños y niñas trabajan en el sector rural.

En este sector, ya sea familiar de subsistencia o comercial, hay muchos niños, niñas y adolescentes que trabajan en situación de riesgo y en muchos casos de extrema explotación, hasta pueden ser víctimas de organizaciones clandestinas.

Esta fecha tiene como objetivo hacer una reflexión y tomar conciencia sobre lo perjudicial que es el trabajo infantil. Se debe apoyar e impulsar a los niños con una buena educación, brindarles protección y sobre todo que vivan y disfruten de su etapa de ser niños.
