A nivel mundial se celebra cada 12 de abril, el Día Internacional de la Aviación y la Cosmonáutica, en honor al primer viaje espacial realizado por el hombre a la luna.
En el año 1961, el cosmonauta soviético Yuri Gagari, abordó la nave espacial “Vostok 1” y veinte años después, despegó el primer transbordo espacial tripulado. La Unión Soviética, estableció el 9 de abril de 1962 por el Presidium del Soviet Supremos de la URSS, celebrarlo con el nombre Día de la Cosmonáutica, en ruso: День космонавтики. Fecha establecida por decisión de la Federación Aeronáutica Internacional.
Esta fecha se conmemora al principio de la era espacial y de valorar a la ciencia y la tecnología cósmica, esto contribuyen de manera crucial a conseguir los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible y aumentar el bienestar de los Estados y los pueblos.
Asimismo, este día tiene como objetivo sensibilizar al mundo para asegurar que se cumpla la aspiración de reservar el espacio ultraterrestre a fines pacíficos.
La Asamblea General está profundamente convencida de la conveniencia de fomentar y ampliar la exploración y el uso del espacio ultraterrestre con fines pacíficos, perseverar en los esfuerzos para que todos los Estados puedan gozar de los beneficios derivados de esas actividades y mantener el espacio como patrimonio de toda la humanidad.
