Cada 6 de junio se celebra en el mundo el Día Mundial de los pacientes trasplantado. Esta fecha tiene el fin de concientizar a la población sobre la urgencia de elevar el número de trasplantes, siendo la única esperanza para un gran número de personas, pacientes crónicos o terminales.

Según datos de la OMS, se estima que apenas se hacen 10 % de los trasplantes que son necesarios a nivel mundo. El órgano más demandado es el riñón. Las donaciones de órganos en el Perú son bajísimas. En las cifras dela Oficina Nacional de Donación de Órganos y Trasplantes 77 personas fueron donantes efectivos.
