Esta fecha celebramos a nivel internacional el Día Mundial del Vino Malbec, considerado como la cepa insignia de la industria vitivinícola argentina.
«Malbec», es el término proveniente de una variedad o casta de uva originaria del sudoeste de Francia, la cual se utiliza para la elaboración de vino tintos. Su cultivo se ha extendido a América, destacando como los «Nuevos Mundos» de este tipo de vino, Argentina, Chile y la región de California (Estados Unidos), siendo el más reconocido de todos los vinos Malbec de Argentina.
El 17 de abril de cada año, se celebra el Día Mundial del Malbec y debido a este acontecimiento, restaurantes, supermercados, vinotecas y bares de todo el mundo, realizan actividades y ofrecen grandes promociones que tienen como protagonista a esta cepa insigne de vino.
Wines of Argentina (WOFA), es el organismo que reúne a las bodegas argentinas, el cual se encarga de realizar y promocionar los eventos relacionados con la celebración del Día Mundial del Malbec en Argentina y en todo el mundo, presentando una amplia gama de acontecimientos especiales en distintos países, con una programación que involucra diversas actividades sociales, artísticas, musicales, fiestas, festivales gastronómicos, entre otras; y que van asociadas al consumo del vino Malbec.
Según la opinión de algunos enólogos extranjeros, la uva Malbec de Mendoza (Argentina), es la mejor del mundo, entendiendo que el cultivo del Malbec se asentó y se amoldó muy bien en tierras gauchas.
Entre los productores más resaltantes están las bodegas de Familia Zuccardi, Nieto Senetiner, Trapiche, Achával-Ferrer, Viña Cobos, Trivento, Alta Vista, Pulmary, Catena Zapata, y Pascual Toso, todos ellos en la provincia de Mendoza, Yacochuya y El Esteco, en la provincia de Salta (noroeste argentino), Noemia en la provincia de Río Negro y Bodega Océano en la región marítima de Río Negro (ambas en Patagonia).
Asimismo, Chile demostró ser capaz de producir uva Malbec de gran calidad, especialmente en las regiones de Colchagua y San Antonio. Entrre los productores chilenos renombrados de vino Malbec son Viu Manent (considerado en Chile una suerte de especialista en la variedad), Quebrada de Macul, de Martino, y Loma Larga.
Dentro de las características que presenta el cultivo de uva Malbec, están: Los racimos son medianos, muy sueltos y alados, las uvas son pequeñas o medianas, sumamente esféricas, de color negro azulado, con pulpa blanda y piel delgada y la etapa de maduración es en la primera época tardía.
