La psicología perinatal es una disciplina que abarca la prevención, el diagnóstico y la intervención psicológica en mujeres y familias que se encuentran en la etapa pre concepción, gestacional y postnatal, es decir, antes, durante y después del embarazo. En otras palabras, podríamos decir que esta disciplina trata todas aquellas situaciones derivadas de: los problemas de fertilidad, el miedo al parto, los partos traumáticos, la pérdida del bebé, problemas de lactancia, depresión postparto.

Para tener un hijo hay que preparar antes el cuerpo y la mente. En cuanto al cuerpo, tanto la futura madre como el futuro padre han de instaurar hábitos de conducta saludables, entre los que se pueden encontrar: cuidar la dieta, dejar de fumar, dejar la ingesta de alcohol, y realizar ejercicio físico.

También se aconseja controlar los pensamientos y las emociones negativas (cambiar un “nunca me quedaré embarazada” por “seguiremos intentándolo”) y evitar conductas compulsivas como realizar consultas en internet o comprar productos “milagro” para quedarse embarazada. Lo aconsejable es acudir al especialista, tanto médico como psicólogo, si tras un año de intentarlo no se ha conseguido el embarazo (con más de 35 años, este tiempo se reduce a seis meses).
