El 4 de mayo de 1839, se fundó el Diario El Comercio, considerado como el Decano de la Prensa Nacional, quien obtuvo a los más reconocidos periodistas, reporteros, columnistas, reporteros, fotógrafos, entre otros, de toda la historia.
Fundado por el chileno Manuel Amunátegui y el argentino Alejandro Vilota, quienes aplicaron el lema »Orden, libertad y saber». En sus inicios fue un diario vespertino, es decir un diario que era publicado por las tardes, pero en agosto del mismo año pasó a ser un diario comercial, político y literario. Posteriormente, en el año 1875, en Amunátegui, cedió el manejo del diario al panameño José Antonio Miró Quesada, quedando desde entonces la familia Miró Quesada con el control del medio hasta la actualidad.
El Comercio, a inicios de este siglo, se convirtió en el diario más influyente. En la década del 50, se adaptó a los cambios y luego, el 4 de mayo de 1959, el diario lanzó la primera edición con una portada noticiosa, quien antes solo se dedicaba a postear anuncios.
Durante el gobierno de Juan Velasco, mediante decreto-Ley Nº 20681, expropió los diarios en 1974. Por ese motivo, El Comercio se encargó al servicio de las comunidades campesinas y se convirtió en vocero del régimen militar. Asimismo, los medios de comunicación fueron devueltos a sus propietarios legítimos durante el gobierno del presidente Fernando Belaunde, el 28 de julio de 1980.
