Anualmente, más de 36 400 niñas son víctimas de matrimonios infantiles, pese al daño físico y mental que causa en las menores.

Irán es uno de los países, donde las leyes permiten el matrimonio infantil. Para las mujeres, la edad mínima para contraer matrimonio es a partir de los 13 años y para los hombres es a los 15 años. Sin embargo, es posible realizar casamientos a edad más temprana, en caso se cuente con autorización del tutor y de un tribunal.

Según el Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas, una de las principales consecuencias del matrimonio infantil es el embarazo a temprana edad, lo cual impacta a nivel físico y mental en las niñas.

Sahar Bandani, que vive en Zahedán, la ciudad más pobre de Irán y una de las más conservadoras, cuenta que se casó a los 8 años de edas y cuando tenía 10, nació su primera hija. Sin embargo, desde hace 7 años, la iraní rompió sus lazos familiares y no ha vuelto a ver a su hija ni a su nieto.

Mariam Rostamí, es una iraní de 33 años que está en proceso de superar sus adicciones, fue obligada a casarse a los 13. “Mis padres se divorciaron y mi madrastra optó por casarme cuando tenía 13 años. Yo no sabía qué era el matrimonio y muy pronto tuve una hija”, contó. Es así que, tanto Mariam como Sahar recurrieron, mediante el engaño o presión de sus maridos y médicos de cabecera, a los tranquilizantes e incluso a las drogas.

El abandono escolar es otra de las problemáticas que se evidencian como consecuencia del matrimonio infantil, pues no permite que las menores ejerzan su derecho a la educación y, por lo tanto, tampoco conseguir un empleo. Esto lleva a que se perpetúe el ciclo de pobreza y la violencia de género.
