La pandemia ha hecho que la pobreza extrema aumente en 22 años y, si no se trabaja en el 2021, podría deshacerse 40 años de progreso.

La Oficina de Naciones Unidas (ONU) para la Coordinación de Asuntos Humanitarios ha advertido este lunes de que 235 millones de personas de todo el mundo necesitarán asistencia humanitaria y protección en 2021, es decir, una de cada tres, lo que supone un aumento del 40% en un año.

Esta cifra se ve exacerbada por la «conmoción de la COVID-19, que ha llevado el número de personas que necesitan ayuda humanitaria a un nivel sin precedentes», por lo que la ONU y sus socios «se proponen ayudar a 160 millones de las personas más vulnerables».

Entre los retos que se perfilan están el hambre, los conflictos, los desplazamientos y los efectos de la crisis climática, así como la crisis sanitaria y económica provocada por el coronavirus.

La pandemia ha hecho que aumenten los precios de los alimentos, ha propiciado la caída de los ingresos, así como la interrupción de los programas de vacunación y el cierre de escuelas.

«La pobreza extrema ha aumentado por primera vez en 22 años. Múltiples hambrunas se avecinan en el horizonte», alertó el organismo en el documento publicado.

Se necesita «la solidaridad y la financiación del resto del mundo», por lo que la ONU presenta este martes en Ginebra el Panorama Global Humanitario 2021, que establece 34 planes de respuesta que abarcan 56 países vulnerables.

Aunque «el sistema humanitario volvió a demostrar su valor en 2020, suministrando alimentos, medicinas, refugio, educación y otros servicios esenciales a decenas de millones de personas», la crisis «está lejos de haber terminado», advierte el secretario general de Naciones Unidas, António Guterres.

Por eso, ha hecho un llamamiento, ya que «los presupuestos de ayuda humanitaria se enfrentan a graves carencias a medida que el impacto de la pandemia mundial sigue empeorando. Juntos, debemos movilizar recursos y ser solidarios con las personas en su hora más oscura de necesidad».

«El próximo año necesitaremos 35 mil millones de dólares para evitar la hambruna, luchar contra la pobreza y mantener a los niños y las niñas vacunados y en la escuela», señaló el jefe humanitario de la ONU, Mark Lowcock.

En este sentido, «nos encontramos ante una elección clara. Podemos dejar que 2021 sea el año de un gran retroceso -deshaciendo 40 años de progreso- o podemos trabajar juntos para asegurarnos de que todos encontremos una salida a esta pandemia», concluyó.

Aunque en 2020 los donantes internacionales han batido una cifra récord de donaciones, con 17 mil millones de dólares para la respuesta humanitaria colectiva, las necesidades están creciendo, y la financiación sigue siendo menos de la mitad de lo que pidieron Naciones Unidas y sus socios.
