Un día como hoy, 3 de abril de 1899, llegó a nuestro país el primer barco japonés Sakura Maru con los primeros inmigrantes provenientes de la Nación del sol naciente.
HISTORIA:
La tripulación contaba con 790 inmigrantes japoneses, llegaron a Lima con contrato de trabajo en labores relacionadas con labranza en haciendas y fábrica de azúcar. Desde ese entonces, hasta la actualidad es una de las comunidades más importantes del Perú.
Estos ciudadanos eran contratos por cuatro años y el pago que recibían era de 2 y ½ libras esterlinas mensuales, laboraban 10 horas diarias, contaban con atención medica y alojamiento. La edad de estos trabajadores japoneses tenía que ser entre los 20 y 25 años.
Posteriormente, en 1909 el fluyo de inmigrantes japonés aumentó de gran manera, se contaron más de seis mil ciudadanos. En el inicio de los años 30, se hicieron campañas contra los japoneses, es ahí donde interviene el presidente peruano Oscar R. Benavides, en el año 1936, el limitó el ingreso de los inmigrantes, sin embargo, ya existía una colonia japonesa en el país.
Luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, donde la comunidad japonesa en el Perú fue protagonista, se continuó con las actividades, mediante las prácticas tradicionales heredadas de sus ancestros, como el Año Nuevo, el Día de las niñas y de los niños, festividades budistas como el Obón y el Ohigan, entre otras.
