El comercio no autorizado o ilegal de fauna silvestre es considerado como una de las mayores actividades del crimen organizado. A nivel mundial, el tráfico ilegal de la fauna silvestre es uno de los comercios ilegales más lucrativos y genera entre 7,800 y 10,000 millones de dólares por año, según la Estrategia Nacional para Reducir el Tráfico Ilegal de Fauna Silvestre 2017-2027.
Además, este tráfico es una de las principales causas de la pérdida de nuestra diversidad biológica. Más de 300 especies de animales silvestres del Perú son objeto de tráfico ilegal y cerca de 50 de ellas están en alguna categoría de amenaza de extinción.
En el caso de las aves, estas son capturadas en sus hábitats naturales y luego “preparadas” para nunca más regresar. Muchas mueren en el camino; y se estima que, de cada diez aves capturadas, solo una o dos sobreviven.
La normativa forestal y de fauna silvestre indica que es ilegal la posesión, captura, transporte y venta de especies silvestres sin autorización. En ese sentido, se recomienda no comprar animales silvestres de origen ilegal, dado que hacerlo convierte al cliente en un agente más de esta actividad ilícita.
Es importante comprender que la compra o uso de estos animales vivos, así como de productos medicinales u ornamentales derivados de estos, motiva que el mercado ilegal se extienda ocasionando terribles daños.
