El 25 de abril del año 2007, el poeta trujillano José Watanabe, dejó de existir en la ciudad de Lima. No solo recordado poeta, sino también como guionista de cine y documentales.
José Watanabe, nació el 17 de marzo de 1945 en Laredo en Trujillo. Con una infancia pobre, sus padres trabajaron como campesinos en una hacienda azucarera al norte del país hasta que el destino les jugó una buena pasada: por ser acreedores del premio de una lotería de Lima y Callao y viajaron a Trujillo, la capital de la provincia. Posteriormente viajo a Lima para seguir con sus estudios superiores.
Sus poemas se ubicaban especialmente en los recuerdos de Laredo, su inspiración nacía por sus calles, su arquitectura, entre otros puntos. Su formación fue esencialmente autodidacta, no sólo se desarrolló como poeta sino también como guionista de cine y documentales. Estuvo muy involucrado en el medio televisivo e hizo una adaptación de Antígona de Sófocles para el grupo de teatro Yuyachkani.
