Un 24 de mayo del año de 1964, ocurrió en Lima, una de las tragedias más recordadas del fútbol peruano, siendo escenario del mismo, el reconocido Estadio Nacional, en donde por la anulación de un legítimo gol de la selección peruana frente al equipo argentino, se produjo un incidente con 328 muertos y unos 500 heridos.
En la fecha del 24 de mayo de 1964, las selecciones de fútbol de Perú y Argentina disputaron un partido clave para la clasificación a los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio. Los albicelestes ganaban 1-0 a los blanquirojos, cuando a falta de dos minutos para el final del partido, el juez uruguayo Ángel Pazos anuló un legítimo gol a favor del combinado peruano.
Esta decisión causó gran malestar en el público y marcó el inicio de la violencia. La policía tomó la errónea decisión de echar gas lacrimógeno contra la tribuna norte. Las puertas del estadio se encontraban cerradas con gruesos candados por disposición de la administración del estadio. Los espectadores encerrados salieron despavoridos y en el tropel murieron oficialmente más de 300 personas entre asfixiados y atropellados. Ya en la calle, la multitud convertida en turba causó destrozos en la propiedad privada en los alrededores del estadio.
Cuando la capital volvió a la calma, se contaron 328 muertos y unos 500 heridos. El Gobierno peruano declaró estado de sitio y suspendió las garantías constitucionales, pero para entonces lo peor ya había pasado. En consecuencia, de este incidente, se tuvo que reducir la capacidad a 45.000 espectadores.
