El 01 de junio del año 1983, se creó el distrito de San Borja, es uno de los 43 distritos que conforman la provincia de Lima, que fue en la segunda etapa del gobierno del expresidente Fernando Belaúnde Terry, el cual dispuso la Ley Nº 23604. Anteriormente pertenecía al distrito de Surquillo. Limita al norte con San Luis, La Victoria y Ate, al este con Santiago de Surco, al sur con Surquillo y al oeste con San Isidro.
En la etapa del Intermedio Tardío, aproximadamente entre los años 1100 y 1450 d. C. el territorio de San Borja era parte del señorío Ichma, unidad política que administraba la región Lima ante la llegada de los incas al lugar.
Dicho señorío floreció en la costa central de Lima, y abarcó los valles bajos de las cuencas del río Rímac y Lurín, siendo gobernada desde el centro religioso de Pachakamaq y cuando los españoles fundaron Lima dieron estas tierras al conquistador “Antonio Picardo’’, secretario de Francisco Pizarro. Luego, este territorio pasó a ser propiedad de los jesuitas hasta que fueron expulsados por orden del rey de España.
Entre las atracciones turísticas que podemos encontrar en San Borja están: el Museo de la Nación, la Huaca San Borja, el Complejo Arqueológico Limatambo, la Biblioteca Nacional del Perú y el Teatro Nacional.
