El equipo danés irrumpió con determinación y disfrutó de su mejor ocasión a los cinco minutos. Amenazó Yussuf Poulsen con un remate de cabeza que salió por encima del larguero. Después, suyo fue el balón pero no encontró soluciones a su dominio.
Austria no se quedó parada. Estuvo al acecho en busca de su oportunidad. La tuvo poco antes de la media hora con un cabezazo de Martin Hinteregger para culminar una acción nacida a balón parado.
Dinamarca encontró el alivio en los primeros minutos de la segunda parte cuando rompió la resistencia rival. Un centro del sevillista Thomas Delaney acabó en la red gracias a Joakim Maehle que batió al meta desde la boca de gol.
Austria buscó la reacción. Acaparó el balón con permiso de su adversario que resguardó sus energías para hacer frente a la situación y encontrar una nueva ocasión con espacios.
Los cambios de Franco Foda, que dio entrada a Karim Onisiwo y después a Michael Gregoritsch y Florian Kainz, no surtieron efecto. Austria se quedó sin tiempo y casi sin opciones de clasificación mientras Dinamarca prepara su equipaje.
