Este último viernes se realizó el sorteo de la fase de grupos de la CONMEBOL Libertadores en la ciudad de Luque, Paraguay. Los equipos peruanos participantes como Sporting Cristal y Universitario conocieron el grupo y sus rivales a enfrentar.
El último subcampeón, Universitario de Deportes, quedó encasillado en un grupo complicado con el último campeón del torneo como el Palmeiras de Brasil y Defensa y Justicia, último ganador de la Sudamericana. El otro rival saldrá del ganador de la llave entre Independiente del Valle y Gremio donde los ecuatorianos tienen la ventaja al ganar el partido de ida por 2-1.
La última vez que el equipo crema disputó la fase de grupos fue en el 2014, edición en la quedo en el último lugar con 1 punto obtenido. El único rival con el que tiene historial en esta competición es con Palmeiras, con quien se enfrentó 4 veces, perdiendo en 3 y obteniendo un triunfo en Brasil, siendo este la única victoria de un equipo peruano en tierras brasileñas.
Por su parte, el campeón Sporting Cristal estará en el grupo E con Sao Paulo de Brasil, Racing de Argentina y Rentistas de Uruguay. El objetivo del cuadro dirigido por Roberto Mosquera es pasar a los octavos de final, algo que no sucede desde el 2004.
En el historial con sus rivales, la última vez que enfrento a Racing fue en el 2015 con la recordada victoria en Avellaneda pero cayendo en Lima. Con Sao Paulo, el único antecedente fue en la Copa Conmebol 1994 donde los brasileños ganaron de local 3-1 y empataron sin goles la vuelta. Ante Rentistas de Uruguay se verá las caras por primera vez, al hacer el equipo uruguayo su debut en este torneo.
