Por la fecha 5 de la Copa Sudamericana, FBC Melgar no pudo en su visita a Athletico Paranaense cayendo por 1-0 en el Arena da Baixada, en Curitiba. El único gol del encuentro llegó de los pies de Renato Kayser a los 43 minutos, con lo que el combinado ‘rojinegro’ deberá resolver todo en la capital para avanzar en el certamen.
Paranaense, al que tan sólo le interesaba la victoria en casa, salió al ataque desde el primer minuto, impulsado por el regreso de Nikao, y en los diez primeros minutos consiguió cuatro finalizaciones, entre las cuales un cabezazo de Vitinho, goleador del equipo, pasó cerca de la portería defendida por Carlos Alberto Cáceda.
Los locales mantuvieron la presión y por poco abrieron el marcador a los 16 minutos con el cobro de una falta de Jadson que Richard desvió y el balón pasó cerca del poste derecho de Cáceda. El conjunto brasileño tuvo dificultades para convertir su claro dominio en goles y siguió pecando por la falta de puntería o por los errores en las finalizaciones, como el que cometió Vitinho cuando, en el minuto 29, recibió un balón dentro del área y lo entregó a los zagueros peruanos.
La presión sólo rindió fruto en el minuto 43 cuando Kayser abrió el marcador para el Paranaense tras conectar un fuerte cabezazo rechazado inicialmente por Cáceda y aprovechar el rebote para anotar.
El Melgar reaccionó al comienzo del segundo tiempo y presionó con finalizaciones de Reyna, Horacio Orzán e Ibérico, este último con un cabezazo que pasó muy cerca de la portería de Santos. El dominio del conjunto peruano en el segundo tiempo duró hasta el minuto 19 cuando el volante Orzan fue expulsado por acumular dos amarillas.
Esta expulsión y la entrada del centrocampista Léo Cittadini y del atacante Carlos Eduardo en los lugares de Jadson y Richard le dieron un nuevo impulso al equipo local, que recuperó el dominio y volvió a volcarse al ataque.
Mientras que el Melgar optó por jugar a los contragolpes únicamente con Ibérico en el ataque, el Paranaense multiplicó sus ofensivas, principalmente con Nikao y Carlos Eduardo. En los últimos minutos el capitán brasileño, Thiago Heleno recibió la tarjeta roja.
El conjunto de Curitiba llegó a los 12 puntos, tres más que el Melgar, y lejos del ya eliminado Aucas ecuatoriano (6), que hoy goleó por 3-0 y hundió aún más al Metropolitano venezolano (3).
