A pesar de los intentos del Mannucci, por cambiar su suerte, ya en la segunda mitad, Melgar amplió el marcador luego de que el defensa Anthony Fuentes cometiera un penalti, al tocar un balón en el área con el antebrazo, y la pena máxima fue resuelta por el artillero argentino Bernardo Cuesta, al minuto 61.
Golpeado en su amor propio, el equipo trujillano fue al frente y a los 76 el delantero José Carlos Fernández descontó nuevamente con un remate desde el centro del área luego de recibir un centro bajo enviado por el uruguayo Felipe Rodríguez. Cuando se jugaban 84 minutos, el Melgar se quedó con diez jugadores luego de que el centrocampista Walter Tandazo recibiera una segunda tarjeta amarilla.
