Con gran rendimiento en la altura de Quito, la Selección Peruana venció 2-1 a Ecuador en el Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, por la fecha 8 de las Eliminatorias Qatar 2022. Dos golazos de Christian Cueva y Luis Advíncula, con un agigantado Gianluca Lapadula, la Blanquirroja todavía sueña con el Mundial.

El equipo peruano se mostró incisivo con un esquema defensivo que neutralizó a los ecuatorianos, y volcó sus contragolpes a la velocidad de Lapadula y Cueva. Perú se perdió el primero, tras un disparo cruzado y rasante de Lapadula, que se escapó junto al vertical izquierdo a los 13’ y 5 minutos después desperdició un mano a mano, en el que dejaba indicios positivos en la primera parte.

Pero en el segundo tiempo, Ecuador salió con otra actitud y más intenso, es por eso que vendría la acción polémica del partido. Una mano de Luis Abram dentro del área de peruana, hizo que el árbitro señalara un penalti en el minuto 48, pero tras casi cinco minutos de incertidumbre, el árbitro uruguayo, Esteban Ostojich reconsideró su decisión después de consultar el VAR.

Ecuador recién arrimó peligro sobre el arco de Pedro Gallese, con un remate cruzado y rasante que se escapó junto al vertical derecho del atacante Gonzalo Plata, que reemplazó a Jordy Caicedo apenas comenzado el segundo tiempo.

Perú en el minuto 61 salió en letal contraataque, Lapadula y Cueva fueron los encargados de salir a gran velocidad, el atacante avanzó hasta cerca del portero local, dio pase a Cueva que completamente solo por el costado izquierdo empujó el balón al fondo del arco.

Ecuador atacó pero sin ideas, sin claridad y Perú se defendió con los ojos bien abiertos para pescar el mínimo error del sistema defensivo local, que en otro contraataque permitió a Lapadula aguantar el balón cerca del área contraria, acompañó bien Advíncula, que con balón dominado se aproximó al arco y con potente remate derrotó al portero Domínguez, al minuto 87.

Ecuador descontó a través del atacante Plata, burló rivales y con remate cruzado derrotó al portero Gallese, al minuto 91. Con esta derrota, Ecuador cedió sus tres primeros puntos de local, quedándose estancado en 9 puntos y sin poder sumar en esta doble fecha, mientras que la Selección nacional consiguió su primer triunfo en el camino a Catar 2022.
