Desde Argentina, Ricardo Gareca, brindó una conferencia de prensa virtual transmitido a través del Facebook oficial de la Selección Peruana, para hablar sobre los próximos partidos por Eliminatorias y la nueva cuarentena impuesta por el gobierno.
El Director técnico, hizo referencia a las especulaciones de una posible renuncia y confirmó su permanencia: “En ningún momento se me ha cruzado por la cabeza dejar la Selección Peruana, tengo un contrato que cumplir y mi intención es cumplirla”.
Debido a las nuevas medidas impuestas por el gobierno, Gareca expresó su sentir al respecto: “Me llamó a la reflexión porque la idea era retornar al país pero el Presidente dio un comunicado, y esos minutos me llevaron a la reflexión, porque un deporte como el fútbol en Perú, como se trabajó, con un índice bajo de infectados, se me vino el gran sacrificio que se hizo, y creemos que se hizo un gran trabajo entonces ante esta situación quedé sorprendido. Salvo la coincidencia que se dio con el aniversario de Universitario que uno puede entender; pero, no aceptar, en general se hizo un gran trabajo”.
Respecto a los próximos partidos de Eliminatorias que se jugarán en marzo contra Bolivia y Venezuela, y la posibilidad de hacer de locales en otro país, el técnico manifestó: “El presidente aún no me ha dicho nada, no creo que exista esa posibilidad; hoy por hoy porque confío en la reflexión de las autoridades y en las gestiones de la FPF, no veo viable que la Selección se traslade a otro país”.
Finalmente, Gareca explicó el plan que tiene con los entrenamientos de la selección: “El plan es estrictamente virtual, más de eso no podemos hacer, estamos atados en esas condiciones, creemos que ellos, más allá de este inconveniente, como son profesionales y tienen un interés, están tratando de ponerse en la mejor forma”.
