Fue la mejor ocasión de los peruanos, pues el resto del tiempo sufrió en exceso con los contragolpes del River Plate en su intento sin éxito de sentenciar el triunfo, pues los visitantes tuvieron que conformarse con la victoria por la mínima.
Con este valioso triunfo en el Estadio Nacional de Lima, el 'Kelito' ascendió a la segunda plaza del grupo, donde acumula cuatro puntos y está por encima del Corinthians brasileño, que se queda en el tercer lugar con un punto tras perder por 0-2 frente al líder Peñarol.
