Un par de horas después de que el Racing argentino y el Sao Paulo brasileño igualaran por idéntico resultado en Buenos Aires, ambos equipos saltaron al césped del histórico Centenario en busca de una victoria que les permitiera acercarse a la cima.
Con pocas acciones de peligro en la primera parte, lo más destacado fue un mano a mano entre Washington Corozo y Nicolás Rossi antes de que se cumplieran los primeros 20 minutos. Luego de una mala salida del defensor Joaquín Sosa, el centrocampista ecuatoriano robó el balón y se enfrentó al portero, quien le detuvo sin mayores dificultades un disparo que le salió al medio.
Aunque no tan peligrosa como esa, el Rentistas tuvo una jugada similar cuando Franco Pérez se encaró con el portero Alejandro Duarte; pero, el uruguayo no pudo controlar la pelota luego de recibir un pase largo. Pese a ese fallo, Pérez no dejó de intentarlo y fue quien le generó más peligro a la firme defensa del Sporting Cristal.
En la segunda parte, el Rentistas buscó acercarse a la portería rival por todas las vías posibles. Con velocidad por las bandas, con disparos lejanos y con centros, el once de Martín Varini fue por el gol.
Sin embargo, las oportunidades más claras fueron para los comandados por Roberto Mosquera, que no se llevaron los tres puntos por su falta de puntería a la hora de culminar las jugadas.
Alejandro Hohberg de tiro libre, Cristopher González con un disparo dentro del área, Corozo con un tiro cercano y Joao Grimaldo en un nuevo mano a mano desperdiciaron las mejores situaciones generadas por la formación peruana.
Así, el partido se fue con un 0-0 que no le sirvió a ninguno ya que Sporting Cristal sigue en la última posición y Rentistas dejó escapar la oportunidad de quedar a un punto del segundo.
