A los 13 minutos de iniciado el partido, Universitario se puso en ventaja con un gol del delantero nacional Alex Valera, quien con un tiro raso venció al arquero del equipo cusqueño, siendo esta la única anotación del primer tiempo.
Para la segunda mitad, Cienciano salió más decidido y consiguió el empate a los 8 minutos con una anotación de cabeza de Luis Enrique Álvarez. Pero, Universitario nuevamente se puso adelante en el marcador a los 39 minutos, con gol del panameño Alberto Quintero, quien culminó con éxito un contragolpe del club crema.
La intensidad del encuentro siguió hasta el final, y a los 48 minutos el panameño Abdiel Ayarza igualó el marcador con un potente disparo que venció al portero José Carvallo, quien salió expulsado dos minutos después. Con un hombre menos, la U consiguió la victoria al último minuto, con otro gol de Alberto Quintero, tras una jugada individual.
Con el triunfo, Universitario de Deportes, dirigido por Ángel Comizzo, alcanza los 10 puntos y se pone cuarto en la tabla; mientras que Cienciano, comandado por el técnico argentino Marcelo Grioni, se queda con 14 puntos; pero, continúa liderando el grupo A de la Fase 1, que integran ambos clubes.
