Después de una reestructuración, la Copa Sudamericana estrena nuevo formato donde en la ronda preliminar se enfrentaran equipos de un mismo país. En esa línea, el primer duelo de peruanos que se dará en esta edición será el que protagonicen Universidad Técnica de Cajamarca y Sport Huancayo.

Tanto el partido de ida de este miércoles como el de vuelta, programado para el 7 de abril, se disputarán sin público en el Estadio Monumental de Lima, donde desde el año pasado se disputa toda la liga peruana para evitar desplazamientos a otras regiones y, por ende, reducir las probabilidades de contagio del coronavirus.

Para UTC será su cuarta aparición en la Sudamericana después de haberla disputado en el 2014, 2018 y 2019 donde nunca ha podido pasar de la primera fase obteniendo 1 victoria, 2 empates y tres derrotas. Para Sport Huancayo será su octava participación siendo la del año pasado la mejor de su historia al llegar a octavos de final.

A ambos equipos este partido les toma sin casi haber competido desde diciembre pasado, pues su único partido oficial hasta ahora es el disputado el pasado fin de semana en la jornada inaugural de la primera fase de la Liga 1 de Perú, donde cosecharon resultados opuestos. UTC cayó ante Cienciano por 0-1, mismo resultado con el que Sport Huancayo venció a Municipal.

Cabe recordar que la última vez que equipos peruanos se enfrentaron entre sí por Copa Sudamericana fue en el año 2006. Bolognesi y U. San Martin fueron los equipos y fue el cuadro tacneño que paso de ronda por los goles de visita después de ganar 1-0 en Tacna y caer 2-3 en Lima.
