Se medían en un duelo a 'todo o nada', el último en España, dos de las sensaciones de la Eurocopa, por juego y pegada: Bélgica, con pleno de victorias en su grupo y 7 tantos; y Portugal, campeona actual, también con 7 goles y que, tras un triunfo y una derrota, logró el pase a octavos al final con su empate ante Francia.
En Bélgica, sin el lesionado de última hora Nacer Chadli, su técnico, el español Roberto Martínez, le dio continuidad en el once al madridista Hazard, en detrimento de nuevo del atlético Yannick Carrasco, para formar un trío ofensivo con De Bruyne y Lukaku. Mientras, el seleccionador portugués, Fernando Santos alineó de titulares al lateral Diego Dalot por Nelson Semedo y al mediocentro Palhinha, que salió en la segunda mitad por Danilo ante Francia.
Ambos equipos salieron a competir, muy decididos y sin renunciar ninguno a tener el balón, aunque los lusos trataron de imprimirle más velocidad al juego y avisaron primero con un tiro desviado del extremo del Liverpool Diogo Jota, a pase de Renato Sanches, frente al juego más sereno, de elaboración y toque, de los belgas.
Bélgica se vio lastrada en su juego de toque por la contundencia lusa en la media, con Renato Sanches pletórico, y su concentración atrás, si bien los lusos tampoco estuvieron finos ante el gol. Al equipo de Martínez le faltó más profundidad y echó en falta a De Bruyne, más perdido que otras veces, hasta que a los 42 minutos emergió la calidad belga con un gran gol desde la frontal del menor de los Hazard, Thorgan. A pase de Meunier, recortó hacia dentro y sorprendió de un fuerte chut a Rui Patrício para hacer el 1-0.
Tras el descanso, apenas se llevaba un minuto y se lesionó De Bruyne, que fue sustituido por Dries Mertens. Un serio contratiempo para Bélgica, que se quedaba sin su organizador, sin el talento y el último pase del fino jugador del City, lo que intentó aprovechar Portugal, que, sin más remedio, tenía que buscar un gol como fuera.
Santos buscó más llegada y contundencia arriba, y pronto sacó al campo al 'citizen' Bruno Fernandes, y al atlético Joao Félix, por los mediocampistas Bernardo Silva y Moutinho, y ya en el ecuador de esta mitad a un hombre con mucho más gol como André Silva, exdelantero del Sevilla ahora en el Frankfurt, por Diogo Jota.
Sin embargo, le faltó tino y quizás algo de suerte, pues Ruben Dias tuvo el empate con un cabezazo en el 82, pero Courtois salvó el gol con los puños; y un minuto después el lateral Guerreiro remató a la base del poste izquierdo del meta belga, que también cortó un balón a los pies de André Silva, lo que desembocó en la alegría de los 'Diablos Rojos' y la decepción lusa.
