Escocia fue fiel a su filosofía para buscar su entrada en la historia y, por primera vez, lograr superar la fase de grupos de un gran torneo. Ejerció una fuerte presión, empuje y coraje. Pero se impuso la calidad croata en gran parte de la primera mitad y pasado el cuarto de hora inicial cuando un pase lateral al área desde la derecha de Josip Juranovic llegó a la cabeza de Ivan Perisic, que dejó la pelota muerta en el punto de penalti para que lo recogiera Nikola Vlasic, marcará su tercer gol como internacional y adelantara a Croacia.
Tras este par de arrebatos, de furor, Escocia empezó a acusar el gol. Se embarulla, dejó espacios a su rival y, además, perdió por lesión a uno de los pilares de su zaga, Grant Hanley, que, lesionado, tuvo que dejar su sitio a Scott McKenna a la media hora.
Pero cuando peor estaba, justo antes del descanso, un centro de Robertson al área fue rechazado por la defensa croata y, desde fuera del área, Callum McGregor ejecutó un tiro raso que superó a Dominik Livakovic e igualó el partido.
Al inicio de la segunda parte, a ninguno le servía el empate y por eso el partido se agitó. Luka Modric apareció y su equipo lo notó. Primero con un buen pase a Perisic al que respondió Escocia con una buena opción de John McGinn que se marchó fuera, y después con su gol.
Pasaba la hora de juego cuando el balón rondó el área local. Mateo Kovacic encontró en la media luna al centrocampista del Real Madrid que ejecutó un preciso tiro, con el exterior del pie derecho, que superó a Marshall. Croacia se puso por delante.
Apretó Escocia, que le puso velocidad al juego, ímpetu y balones largos, directos y al área. Llegó más al área de Croacia, que no pudo tomar las riendas en el caos.
Modric propició también el tercero, que sentenció el choque. Botó un córner, encontró en el primer palo a Perisic y su cabezazo fue imposible para el arquero local. Croacia cerró el triunfo y aseguró su clasificación para octavos como segunda de grupo.
