El partido, disputado en el estadio Olímpico Pedro Ludovico de Goiânia, mostró a un Brasil sin brillo que llegó a cumplir con el compromiso clasificado, e invicto, tras haber ganado todos sus partidos anteriores. Con un dominio para ambos equipos y un Ecuador que se presentó con el deseo de vencer al campeón reinante de la Copa, el primero en marcar fue el ‘Scratch’ que anotó en el minuto 36 a través de Eder Militao.
Pero para el segundo tiempo Ecuador salió con todo a buscar el gol que le diera la clasificación a cuartos de final y los dirigidos por el argentino Gustavo Alfaro lo lograron en el minuto 52, con una conquista de Ángel Mena, lo que le sirvió para pasar al cuarto lugar del grupo y dejar eliminado a Venezuela, que perdió por la mínima con Perú en el otro encuentro que se disputó simultáneamente.
El seleccionador brasileño, Adenor Leonardo Bacchi 'Tite', se la jugó con una nómina mixta, para darles descanso a sus figuras entre las que se notó la ausencia de Neymar quien vio las acciones desde la tribuna.
El grupo lo ganó Brasil con 10 puntos, lo siguió Perú con 7 unidades, Colombia con 4 y Ecuador se clasificó con 3, mientras Venezuela quedó eliminada de la Copa.
Los cuartos de final, que se definen en la jornada del Grupo A de mañana lunes, se disputarán en Río de Janeiro, Goiânia y Brasilia los próximos viernes 2 de julio y sábado 3.
