Los "azzurri" encerraron a Suiza en su área y empujaron hasta derrumbar el muro. Saborearon la ventaja en el minuto 19 con Giorgio Chiellini, cuya diana fue anulada tras revisión VAR por un toque con una mano, y poco después consiguieron el premio.
Pese a la sustitución obligada de Chiellini, quien se retiró poco después de la diana anulada por un problema físico, Italia rompió la igualdad con una excelente triangulación entre Locatelli y Berardi. Locatelli abrió el balón con un brillante pase a Berardi para liberarle en la banda derecha y recorrió rápidamente cuarenta metros de campo para cerrar el triángulo con un cómodo remate a placer tras el centro raso de su compañero.
Fue el gol que quitó presión de encima a una Italia que perdonó al menos dos buenas oportunidades para ampliar distancias antes del descanso, primero con Spinazzola y luego con Immobile.
Suiza seguía con vida y regresó tras el descanso con agresividad, en el intento de romper la barrera defensiva italiana, pero sus intentos no tuvieron éxito y fueron castigados a los cinco minutos de nuevo por Locatelli.
El centrocampista del Sassuolo controló el balón en la frontal del área y firmó un zurdazo cruzado que fulminó a Yann Sommer y que desató la euforia de los aficionados de Roma. Fue un golpe psicológico que dejó tocada a Suiza e Italia siguió creando un enorme volumen de juego y oportunidades para hacer más abultado el marcador.
Tras unas oportunidades perdonadas por Immobile y Chiesa, quien saltó al campo en los últimos veinte minutos en sustitución de Insigne, los "azzurri" pusieron la guinda a su partido con el definitivo 3-0. Fue obra de Immobile, delantero del Lazio, con un misil desde fuera del área que lanzó a Italia hacia octavos.
Gracias a esta victoria, el cuadro italiano sumó 29 partidos sin conocer la derrota y diez triunfos consecutivos con el arco en cero. La azzurri se medirá el domingo 20 de junio frente a Gales desde las 11:00 hora peruana en el estadio Olímpico de Roma.
A falta de una jornada para el final del grupo A, Italia, campeón de Europa en 1968 y cuatro veces campeón del mundo, es líder con seis puntos, dos más que Gales y cinco más que Suiza, mientras Turquía cierra el grupo con cero puntos.
