Juan Pablo Varillas no logró avanzar en la ronda de clasificación del US Open, el último Grand Slam de la temporada. La primera raqueta nacional cayó derrotado ante Zizou Bergs en un partido parejo y complicado.

El tenista peruano que se encuentra en el puesto 124 del ATP, sucumbió ante belga que ostenta la posición 200. El duelo de tenis duró por un lapso de dos horas con veinte minutos con un total de tres sets.

Los resultados fueron 2-6, 6-1 y 7-6 (5). Cuando parecía que todo estaba en beneficio de Juan Pablo Varillas dado que tenía la ventaja de 5-2 en el tercer set, el belga luchó para recuperarse llegando hasta los 6-6 y llevandose el tie break, dejando en los ‘qualy’ del US Open al peruano.

Varillas llegó a esta qualy del US Open, luego de representar al Perú en los Juegos Olímpicos Tokio 2020, torneo donde fue eliminado por el argentino Diego Schwartzman, en un encuentro con parciales de 7-5 y 6-4.
