Los 'celestes' fueron claramente superados en el Estadio Nacional y con una diferencia importante en la llave, tendrán que apostar todo en la vuelta en Montevideo.
Ambos equipos se enfrentaron por primera vez en la Sudamericana, pues los seis partidos anteriores se dieron en la Libertadores, con un triunfo para los uruguayos y cinco empates.
Con esta victoria, el equipo uruguayo recibirá como favorito la próxima semana a Cristal en el partido de vuelta, que contará con público gracias a la autorización del gobierno.
El delantero Agustín Álvarez Martínez abrió el marcador para Peñarol a los 8 minutos con un remate de derecha, tras recibir un pase de cabeza de Pablo Ceppelini. La reacción de Cristal llegó dos minutos después con un disparo de Horacio Calcaterra que fue rechazado por Dawson y se frustró el ansiado empate.
Sin embargo, la defensa de Cristal con Chávez y Lora mostró debilidad desde el inicio, lo que fue aprovechado por Peñarol para marcar el segundo, a los 19 minutos, con un remate de izquierda de Facundo Torres.
De inmediato, el técnico de Cristal, Roberto Mosquera, hizo el primer cambio en el equipo, con el ingreso del defensa Johan Madrid por Nilson Loyola debido a una lesión.
El equipo de Larriera demostró su efectividad en el primer tiempo y prácticamente anuló los esfuerzos de ataque del conjunto limeño, que se eclipsó ante la velocidad del rival.
En el segundo tiempo, Cristal intentó remontar con un cabezazo de Liza, que fue a parar a las manos del portero Dawson, y remates de 'Canchita' Gonzáles. Joao Grimaldo disparó un derechazo a ras del suelo para intentar sorprender en la portería del Carbonero, pero Dawson nuevamente controló.
Desde Peñarol, Trindade comandó el ataque en el tiempo complementario para aumentar el resultado, y lo siguieron Canobbio y Gargano con sendos remates rechazados por Duarte.
En el minuto 90, Omar Merlo marcó el descuento para Cristal con un derechazo desde el centro del área, pero Peñarol todavía tenía sed de goles y Gargano anotó el tercero a los 95 minutos.
El partido de vuelta se disputará con público el próximo 18 de agosto en el estadio Campeón del Siglo de Montevideo.
