El cuadro celeste impuso toda su categoría sobre el gramado del estadio Miguel Grau del Callao y gracias a los tantos de Irven Ávila, Erick Rossi (en contra) y Nilson Loyola logró avanzar a la siguiente ronda.
Los dirigidos por Roberto Mosquera iniciaron el encuentro con mucha confianza y rápidamente se hicieron con el dominio del balón. Premio al esfuerzo, Sporting Cristal encontró la apertura del marcador a los 19’ gracias a un tanto de Irven Ávila, quien sombreó al arquero visitante luego de una extraordinaria asistencia de Horacio Calcaterra.
Los minutos siguieron su curso y los del Rímac continuaron acechando la portería rival. Tal es así que a los 38’ Grimaldo se desprendió por la banda derecha y sacó un centro hacia el corazón del área, ahí, Rossi intentó despejar el balón, pero la terminó metiendo en su propia meta ante el lamento de sus compañeros.
Ya en la segunda mitad, Cusco FC encontró rápidamente el descuento gracias a Alfredo Carrillo a los 48’. Esta conquista le permitió al equipo cusqueño adelantar sus líneas en busca del empate, más aún cuando Sporting Cristal se quedó con un hombre menos por la expulsión de Castillo.
Ávila pudo sentenciar el partido, pero envió el balón al travesaño y desperdició una clara chance de gol tras quedar mano a mano con el portero rival. Los minutos finales se llenaron de dramatismo luego que Abisab pusiera el 2-2 a los 93’. Cuando todo hacía indicar que el partido se definiría desde la tanda de penales apareció Loyola a los 97 minutos y marcó el 3-2 final.
