Desde el inicio del partido, Uruguay mostró una postura distinta a la que tuvo en el encuentro frente a Argentina. De hecho, Giorgian de Arrascaeta probó al portero Claudio Bravo en un par de ocasiones antes de los primeros 10 minutos.
Del otro lado, el 3-5-2 que planteó Lasarte complicó a los dirigidos por Óscar Washington Tabárez, que sufrieron mucho con las subidas de Mauricio Isla. Por derecha, el lateral le impuso velocidad a un equipo que manejó muy bien la pelota por intermedio de Charles Aránguiz y Vidal.
Con buen manejo de balón y marca firme por ambos lados, el encuentro era parejo y nada hacía indicar que el cero se iba a romper rápidamente, sin embargo, Ben Brereton tenía otros planes.
Sobre los 26 minutos, el atacante inglés desacomodó a toda la defensa uruguaya con una rápida habilitación para Eduardo Vargas, quien entró al área y dejó sin opciones al portero Fernando Muslera con un potente disparo.

Chile se puso 0-1 arriba y tomó el timón del juego. Uruguay se desinfló y no pudo incomodar a Bravo. Además, en los pocos instantes que Celeste consiguió la pelota, encontró una marca muy dura de hasta seis hombres que siguieron cada movimiento de sus adversarios.
Para el inicio del segundo tiempo, Tabárez sacó del campo Giovanni González y a Nicolás de la Cruz para que ingresaran Nahitan Nández y Martín Cáceres. Con esos cambios, Uruguay pasó a un 3-5-2.
Pese a este cambio, la Celeste no mejoró y por momentos su juego solo se limitó al lanzamiento de centros largos que finalizaron en la cabeza de los defensores Enzo Roco y Franciso Sierralta.
A los 66 minutos, Facundo Torres sirvió un tiro de esquina, Matías Vecino la peinó en el primer poste y Vidal, que tenía la misión de marcar a Suárez e intentó rematar al arco, terminó enviando el balón en su propio arco para decretar el 1-1. Impulsado por el gol, Uruguay creció y arrinconó por unos minutos a Chile, que luego se aproximó nuevamente a la portería defendida por Muslera.
Con el 1-1, Chile alcanzó los cinco puntos en tres encuentros disputados, mientras que Uruguay cosechó su primera unidad en dos partidos.
